How Systemic Racism Has Affected Black Men & How To Overcome Oppression

  Systemic racism refers to racial discrimination in society's policies, practices, and institutions. It can take many forms, including discriminatory laws and procedures and implicit biases held by individuals in positions of power (Alexander, 2010). One of the most significant ways systemic racism has affected Black Americans is through the criminal justice system. Black men, in particular, have been disproportionately targeted by law enforcement and the criminal justice system, leading to high arrests, convictions, and incarceration rates. Referred to as "mass incarceration." For example, despite comprising only 13% of the US population, Black men represent 34% of the prison population. And once incarcerated, the sentence they receive is usually longer than those of white men convicted of similar crimes.
